Cybersecurity Awareness Month was created to help individuals protect themselves as cyber threats are commonplace and continue to increase every year. This year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber” to demonstrate that cybersecurity is all about people and making smart decisions to mitigate your cyber risk.
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) whose purpose is to understand, manage, and reduce risk to our cyber and physical infrastructure along with the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) lead the effort to raise cybersecurity awareness nationally and internationally. Their website has various resources and best practices to help individuals and businesses stay cyber secure.
Now more than ever, it is imperative for companies to protect themselves against the threat of a cyber attack regardless of company size. Having strong cybersecurity measures in place could mitigate the risk of an incident. This includes working with vendors and suppliers that take ownership of their role in your organization’s security processes. Here are some tips that can help mitigate your cyber risk:
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Use strong passwords
- Train employees to recognize and report Phishing
- Keep your software updated
- Review your Cyber Insurance Coverage
- Have a third party vendor scan your network for vulnerabilities
- Have a business continuity plan in place
